Association for Renewable Energy Cooking Appliances
AFRECAAccess to healthy, clean, safe, reliable and affordable cooking technologies remains one of the great challenges for the majority of low-income households on the African continent. Recognising the need to supply the demand for renewable and energy efficient cooking appliances through an organised, commercially sustainable industry, important role-players identified the need to form an industry association to act on behalf of suppliers, distributors, developers and promoters in the industry.AFRECA (Association For Renewable Energy Cooking Appliances) was formally founded on 18 February 2005 when 24 representatives attended the first meeting held in Johannesburg. Divergent organisations such as Government, NGO’s, technology suppliers as well as end-users were represented. AFRECA was formed as a division in the Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA), thereby capitalising on existing infrastructure and alignment with international networks through the International Solar Energy Society (ISES). SESSA is a section 21 company (not for profit company) that aims to support renewable energy and energy efficiency in the southern African context.
